Obesity

Weight Loss

About one-third of the U.S. population is overweight. One in five people not only exceeds ideal weight, but also meets the clinical criteria for obesity. In the 1990s, rates of obesity more than doubled, and are currently rising by over 5% per year. Because excess body weight is implicated as a risk factor for many different disorders, including heart disease, diabetes, several cancers (such as breast cancer in postmenopausal women, and cancers of the uterus, colon, and kidney), prostate enlargement (BPH), female infertility, uterine fibroids, and gallstones, maintaining a healthy body weight seems prudent. For overweight women, weight loss can significantly improve physical health. A four-year study of over 40,000 women found that weight loss in overweight women was associated with improved physical function and vitality as well as decreased bodily pain. The risk of death from all causes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, or other diseases increases in overweight men and women in all age groups. Losing weight and keeping it off is, unfortunately, very difficult for most people.

Being overweight is a risk factor for gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, and various other disorders of pregnancy.

Occlusive Arterial Disease

Peripheral Vascular Disease

Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) refers to conditions that primarily affect the arteries of the body, with the exception of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. Those are covered in the article on cardiovascular disease. The most common areas for PVD are the arteries of the legs and upper arms, the carotid (neck) arteries, the abdominal aorta and its branches, and the renal (kidney) arteries. Conditions affecting the veins, such as chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, and hemorrhoids, are not usually included in PVD.

Osgood-Schlatter Disease

Osgood-Schlatter Disease

Osgood-Schlatter disease is a form of osteochondrosis, a disease of the growth center at the end of long bones. The disease occurs in adolescence, most commonly among 10- to 15-year-old boys, and is often the result of rapid growth combined with competitive sports that overstress the knee joint. The patellar tendon, which attaches the kneecap to the tibia, is sometimes strained and partially torn from the bone by the powerful quadriceps muscles. This tearing, called avulsion, may be extremely painful and is sometimes disabling. It may occur in one or both knees. The knee is usually tender to pressure at the point where the large tendon from the kneecap attaches to the prominence below.

Osteoarthritis (OA)

Osteoarthritis Arthritis (OA)

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a universal consequence of aging among animals with a bony skeleton. This common disease develops when the linings of joints degenerate, leading to pain and decreased mobility. Many factors contribute to the development of OA. The disease is primarily associated with aging and injury and was once called “wear-and-tear” arthritis. OA may occur secondary to many other conditions. However, in most cases, the true cause of OA is unknown.
